TOPOGRAPHIC MAPPINGTopographic maps are one of the most widely used of all maps and the feature that most distinguishes topographic maps from maps of other types is the use of ‘contour lines’ to portray the shape and elevation of the land. Topographic maps render the three-dimensional ups and downs of the terrain on a two-dimensional surface. Topographic maps are maps that show locations and elevations of natural and cultural features of a given area. Standard colors and symbols have been designated for use on these maps. Topographic maps are generally oriented to show north at the top. Topographic maps depict natural and constructed features of the Earth's surface such as landforms which are represented by contours and spot heights, streams, lakes, dams, roads and tracks, localities, built-up areas, vegetation, conservation, parks, indigenous lands, defense areas and forestry reserves. They also identify the principal works of man, such as roads, boundaries, transmission lines, and major buildings.
