CONTOUR MAPPING

The numeric representation of elevation with the use of contour lines is a very important aspect of modern cartography. Contour maps mostly show natural features and man-made structures. Usually contour maps portray ground relief like landforms and terrain, detailed forest cover, irrigation/drainage systems like lakes and rivers, populated areas, transportation routes, and basic infrastructure facilities like roads and railways, administrative areas, and artificial installations.

Contour maps are based on ‘contour lines’, on which a number of successive points of equal relief and are used as a tool to depict the topography of a particular place on a map. The height of the ground is shown as above Mean Sea Level (M.S.L.) in feet or meter. It can be traced at any interval as per the requirement. If the contours are traced very near to each other then it represents a steep slope and if the contours are traced far away from each other, a gentler slope is indicated.
